Polyurethane sheets: Biomechanics & Tooth movement

The two main types of aligner sheets prevailing in the dental industry are polyurethane and glycol-modified PET sheets.

The best aligner sheets in the market are polyurethane sheets. These are the polymer formed of isocyanate with a polyol in the presence of the catalyst and other additives. The first aligner made was of a single layer of rigid PU. Later, the introduction of thermoplastic PU improved the flexibility, fracture resistance, and transparency of aligner sheets.

Due to their adaptable qualities, polyurethane sheets have recently emerged as dentists, dental labs, and aligner manufacturers’ preferred material for aligners.

Taglus PU FLEX sheets: Adapted thermoplastics with elastomer characteristics have outstanding physical properties, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, adhesive properties, and processing convenience. In terms of efficient, quick, and precise tooth movement it has definitely turned the tables. The material’s excellent biocompatibility and comfort have improved the standards for compliance and the optimum result rate.

Let us examine the mechanical and biological characteristics in more detail to see what makes PU a better sheet.

Generally speaking, polyurethane sheets are perfect for complex and multiple-plane tooth movements involving intrusion, protrusion, rotation, or crown tipping. In order to effectively move the teeth in the desired direction, the ceramic button built on the teeth provides a functional contact between the aligner and the teeth. This button ensures the snug fit of aligners & consistent orthodontic force application.

The movement of multiple teeth mandates the application of a high-strength thermoplastic material that is both flexible and robust enough to deliver 45-70MPa of cumulative yield strength. Taglus’ PU flex sheets have substantial yield strength up to 55 MPa and a superior break strength of 61MPa. Therefore, even after distortion or elasticity loss, there are no signs of rupture. This particular trait is the main advantage of high-effort, efficient tooth movement. The wear period for the Taglus PU FLEX aligner sheet is reduced to just seven days because it exerts a constant and 20% greater initial orthodontic force on the teeth without deforming.

As a result of the high elasticity, flexibility & less deformation, Taglus PU flex sheets are 50%  faster in bringing the optimal results without being harsh to bones & surrounding bone structures.
